She ruins the day

"Christy, are you two getting married?" she asks with a judging tone. It seems she always waits to asks me these sorts of questions while I'm trapped in her car.

"Why?" I respond.

"People are asking," she answers.

"Like what people?" I ask calmly.

She skips over my question and says, "The situation is uncomfortable for everyone."

I raise my eyebrows, "hmmm," I respond.

"You've put us in the same situation as Tim and Jamie," she continues.

I don't say anything to this. I am trying desperately to hold my tongue.

"It's just hard for us to get to know Bryan given the current.....situation," she says.

I am quiet. I am fuming. I have visions of myself jumping out of the car in the middle of the roadway just to get away from her.

"I don't know what you want me to do...to say," I answer, "but this isn't about what I can do. It's about you. And dad." I take a breath and formulate my words carefully, "I'm not moving out. Neither is he. We aren't getting married right this second. I've tried to allow ample time for you to get to know one another, but you are the one who has shot down invitations. You've never invited us over for dinner...." my voice trails off. I am at a loss for words now.

"As I said, it's just hard for us to get to know Bryan given the current situation," she says.

"So if we were getting married, you would make an effort to get to know him?" I ask.

"Well, yes," she answers, "because then we would know that it was getting serious."

"AHH!' I exclaim, "you don't think me living with him is serious?? I sigh loudly and place my hand over my eyes to shield the tears. I could fill the void will a million words, but instead, I close my eyes and bite my lower lip. "Please take me home," I say.

She looks at me with sadness and explains that she didn't mean to ruin the outing.

"Please. Just take me home now." She has succeeded in ruining my day.
